Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23

The other day, I found myself introduced to the ABC sitcom Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23.

I wasn’t expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. I thought the sitcom and its characters were pretty edgy. Unfortunately, this may have been too edgy for ABC and its loyal viewers. The sitcom was canceled after 26 episodes.

So far, I have only seen the first couple of episodes, but I really like the characters and the situations that they find themselves in. It’s different from what I’m used to seeing through sitcoms on television.

You have the naive, uptight, small town girl, June, who movies to New York City only to see her perfect little world fall apart around her. She seeks out a roommate who appears to be exactly what she’s looking for at first glance, but ends up being somewhat of a sociopath.

Her roommate, Chloe – the titled ‘B—- in Apt. 23,’ is extremely raw in terms of personality. She speaks bluntly, saying what many would never say. This type of character can also be seen in CBS’ sitcom Two Broke Girls played by Kat Dennings. Apt. 23 takes the character to a whole other level though, pushing her antics into rough waters.

Another notable character in Apt. 23 is James Van der Beek, playing himself. His role in the sitcom deals with the constant struggle he faces to get past his role on Dawson’s Creek. He is present in every episode as Chloe’s best friend, offering insight into Chloe’s background and explaining her antics.

I’m excited to continue on with the 26 episodes that are available and see what the plot has in store. It’s unfortunate that the show has already been canceled, as it may have become a show I would tune into weekly.
